Today we're going to learn about the steps of the scientific method. You'll be following these steps to conduct your experiment. Before you begin today's project lesson you'll need the following:
- A 3 or 4 different sized pieces of paper. You'll be using these for an experiment.
- Something to write on and with. You'll be conducting an experiment and will need to write information down.
Once you have those things you can start on the lesson below.
- Notes: The Scientific Method (Video Link)
- Here's a video of Greg explaining the scientific method and the steps you'll be using to complete your experiment. It's very important that you watch the whole video and reflect on what's being explained. It's going to help you design and conduct your experiment.
- Videos to watch while doing the paper folding experiment. Greg will tell you when to watch these videos in during the first video.
- The Awareness Test (Video Link)
- Watch the video and afterwards reflect on how you use your senses to observe.

- Today we're going to start working on our experiment. Before we conduct the experiment we need to get it set up. Which means we have to first write about why we want to do the experiment and define the experimental parameters. In your class folder you'll find a blank copy of your lab report. It's called "Lab Report". This is the document you'll be working on for the rest of the project. Greg will be leaving you comments on your work. It's very important that you only do one section at a time and not skip ahead. Here's what you need to do today for your project.
- Meet with Greg to talk about your experiment and check if you can do it for this project. During this conversation you'll have to identify the following about your experiment.
- Experimental Question
- Hypothesis
- Independent Variable
- Dependent Variable
- Constants/Controls
- Fill out the Introduction section of your lab report.
- For the Introduction you have to write a paragraph explaining how you thought of this experiment and why you want to conduct it. Greg will be looking for specific details in this paragraph.
- This will be your assignment for tomorrow too.
